Stuart MacDonald Brown, Jr. received a BA from Cornell in 1939 and a PhD in 1942. He served as an assistant, instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, and professor in the Philosophy Department, becoming chairman in 1953. An authority in the philosophy of ethics and political theory, he served as editor of the Philosophical Review from 1950 to 1954 and from 1959 to 1961.
